Oscar Isaac Says Working On X-Men: Apocalypse Was An Excruciating Experience

You may be attempting to forget it, but we all probably remember X-Men: Apocalypse. As production began with some real hope that, after the good X-Men: First Class and the decent X-Men: Days of Future Past, we were finally getting one of the X-Men’s most iconic bad guys in Apocalypse and he would be played by Oscar Isaac.

A few years later and I write this genuinely flabbergasted at how they managed to make such a mess of that movie. I hated the design forced upon Isaac for Apocalypse, he looked like a cheap Power Rangers villain to me. Added to that I thought the script and direction was all over the place, to this writer’s mind it was one of the worst X-Men movies yet, I genuinely enjoyed Origins or The Last Stand more than this.

In a recent video interview with GQ discussing all his most iconic roles Oscar Isaac broached the memories of playing Apocalypse in the aforementioned movie, here is what he said.

Apocalypse, that was excruciating, I didn’t know when I said yes that that was what was going to be happening. That I was going to be encased in glue, latex and a 40-pound suit — that I had to wear a cooling mechanism at all times. I was like, ‘oh, I get to work with these great actors that I like so much,’ but I couldn’t even see them because I couldn’t move my head. And I had to sit on a specially designed saddle, because that’s the only thing I could really sit on, and I would be rolled into a cooling tent in-between takes, and every time I moved, it was just like rubber and plastic squeaking, so everything I said had to be dubbed later as well, and then getting it off was the worst part, because they just had to kind of scrape it off for hours and hours. So, that was X-Men: Apocalypse.”

That does sound horrific for Isaac, however, the real horror was surely saved for the fans that paid good money to go and watch that movie in theaters. I do like Isaac as an actor and he did the job asked of him, but First Class aside, I really don’t care for anything Fox did with the X-Men movies. I am very happy that Dark Phoenix will very likely be Fox’s last movie. Maybe one day Disney will do Apocalypse properly as a villain? Goodness knows what we got was nothing like the villain that intrigued me so much as a child.
