Outlaw Johnny Black | Michael Jai White on Comedic Westerns

Outlaw Johnny Black

Michael Jai White may be better known for his action skills on screen. With Outlaw Johnny Black, he combined his talents for action and comedy in this Western film both in front and behind the camera.

The film reflects the hilarious comedic style of Black Dynamite which also starred Michael Jai White, but in a Western setting that pokes fun at stereotypical tropes in society. Also, the film is inspired by late actors Sidney Poitier and Harry Belafonte, who are well-known Black cinematic figures for decades in Westerns and action films.

Here is the official synopsis:

Hell-bent on avenging the death of his father, Johnny Black vows to gun down Brett Clayton and becomes a wanted man in the process. He goes into hiding, posing as a preacher in a small mining town that’s been taken over by a notorious Land Baron.

The film also stars Anika Noni Rose (The Princess and the Frog, Dreamgirls), Erica Ash (Scary Movie V, Survivor’s Remorse), Byron Minns (Black Dynamite), Chris Browning (Bright, Ray Donovan), and Barry Bostwick (The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Megaforce). Michael Jai White wrote and directed the film with co-writer Byron Minns.

Michael Jai White learned Japanese Jujitsu early and continued his studies into the Shotokan and Kyokushin forms of karate. He won several championships as a national martial arts competitor. He caught the acting bug in college which led to a lead role in the first off-Broadway adaptation of To Kill a Mockingbird and several jobs in commercials, television shows, and films. He landed guest roles on Saved by the Bell, Martin, NYPD Blue, and CSI. Later, he was cast in the lead role of Mike Tyson in the HBO biopic Tyson. He made his mark in Hollywood with a diverse lineup of films that included Exit Wounds, Undisputed 2, Silver Hawk, Blood & Bone, Black Dynamite, and Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married.

Outlaw Johnny Black is currently in select theaters today.
