Yep, this film is still happening. Or rather, the film seems like it’s very close to actually happening. According to a new report from Deadline, Julius Avery is set to write and direct Flash Gordon, based on the pulp comic strip character of the same name. The strip gave birth to the serial, the likes of which helped influence George Lucas for the style of Star Wars.
Avery very recently directed the pulpy zombie flick Overlord, which is set to hit theaters in the next week and a half or so. The film is clocking in at a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes so far, which is great, but we’ll see if that translates into box office dollars. Regardless, it’s clear that Paramount has enjoyed their collaboration with him, which is great for us, as it speaks volumes about Overlord‘s quality.

The last time we saw Flash Gordon was in the form the 1980 film starring Sam Jones, which featured a soundtrack from Queen. Director Matthew Vaughn was originally looking to direct, but seeing as he’s busy in the world of Kingsman with both a sequel and a prequel, he’s obviously pretty tied up. He’ll only be acting as one of the producers now.
