The Oz series of books from L. Frank Baum haven’t really gotten a proper adaptation. Sure, we have the classic Wizard of Oz film starring Judy Garland, but they don’t touch the tone of the novels. We also have Return to Oz, but as much as I love that movie, that thing is waaay too dark for what the stories ultimately were.
Personally, I think the best approach would be a TV series, which as it turns out, is exactly what’s happening. Variety is reporting that Legendary Entertainment is working on bringing these novels to the small screen. On board to write and produce is Ed Ricourt, who is perhaps best known for his work on Now You See Me as well as work on Wayward Pines and Jessica Jones.
Here’s how the outlet describes the upcoming take on the series:
“The series will examine stories and characters in Oz that haven’t been previously explored. When the return of a long-exiled Witch brings fear, division and war to Oz, the only hope is a servant girl who may become the most powerful and dangerous woman in the land.”
“I’m thrilled to partner with Legendary TV and dj2 to adapt my take on Baum’s rich, complex OZ book series which has influenced me creatively since childhood,” Ricourt said to the outlet.
Admittedly, I like the idea of turning this into a series, as I probably read like eight of these books when I was little, but Now You See Me isn’t really a film I look back on with fond memories. That being said, if you have the right project with the right filmmaker or writer, you can get amazing things.
