According to a new report, Paramount are said to be moving on from the ‘Kelvin Timeline’ Star Trek movies starring Chris Pine. The Kelvin Timeline Star Trek movies are the three movies that began with J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek, until Star Trek: Beyond. There has been talk of a fourth movie in this series for a long time. However, Beyond was out in 2016, so we would be a decade removed before any sequel can happen.
As per Variety,
‘The hope is to have a fresh “Star Trek” movie, though the studio has moved on from the idea of bringing back Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and the rest of the ensemble from the J.J. Abrams reboot.’
Ergo, Paramount do want new Star Trek movies, but it clearly won’t be a continuation of the Kelvin films. What that means for what will come next is anyone’s guess.
Personally, I think the post-Picard Season 3 era is ripe for a new set of movies. What may limit that is that there is no series to jump off of. Picard Season 3’s ending seems like Picard’s son and Seven could on to a new Next Generation series. However, there is nothing in development on that front we know of.

So… I’m not sure. However, it seems unlikely they’ll reboot the classic characters again. So in terms of bankability and fresh ground to till, that post-Picard era still seems ripe to me. Though I personally think Star Trek is a TV franchise more than a film franchise. A few exceptions here and there and Star Trek has never been a box office giant. Attempts to make it cinematic and accessible to casuals are what resulted in Abrams’ reboot which died after two lukewarm sequels.
I guess we will just have to wait and see what happens. However, I do have issues with how the Star Trek franchise has been handled since Abrams’ (in my opinion ill advised) reboot. On the TV side the only show that’s felt consistent with the franchise roots is Strange New Worlds. Discovery was a bit of a mess from the start, even though it went in some interesting directions that offered more in potential than they delivered. As for Picard, Season 3 was brilliant and that’s why I’d start there, as said above. However, Season 1 was rubbish and Season 2 was absolutely, pure bobbins (translation: unwatchable).
Like Star Wars, it’s hard to come back from a J.J. Abrams franchise assassination attempt. Let’s see if Star Trek can pull it off?
