The crazy statistic of 37.3 million Americans, or 10 percent of the country, have diabetes in one form or another. At least 3 million must have regular insulin injections to survive. Despite the commonality, most people on insulin struggle to pay their medical bills to keep themselves alive, as told in the documentary Pay or Die.
Filmmakers Rachael Dyer and Scott Alexander follow three families in their stories to struggle to get insulin and even hope to change the laws in this nation.
Here is the official synopsis:
The documentary follows three families who all try to provide their diabetic relative with insulin in order to survive. Although the families come from different backgrounds, they all face the obstacle; providing for a sick loved one. The way they deal with this problem affects them in unique ways, but a commonality amongst them remains the same: families are falling apart. The common issues they face shine light on the timely and crucial insulin storage. The arduous and costly process makes this drug inaccessible to the majority of patients—this is a call to action.
