Peacemaker Season 2 E07 Review – Not As Good As I Hoped

Here's my Peacemaker Season 2 E07 review folks and to be honest this one was not as good as I had hoped it would be.

Here’s my Peacemaker Season 2 E07 review folks and to be honest this one was not as good as I had hoped it would be. I’ll get into why that was the case for me, but by no means is this preventing me enjoying Season 2. I just feel like maybe we needed a bit more here, and a bit less there at times. I think I just really felt like for all the set up, this episode was actually one of the weaker of Season 2.

This is a MILD SPOILERS review. I won’t detail the whole plot, but I” mention a few specifics to highlights my points.

What I Liked

What works best in Episode 7 for me is Joh Cena himself. I really do enjoy Chris’s arc this season and the inevitable conclusions of that arc are well played out. Cena really is a good actor, and how many ex-wrestlers can we say that about? He’s so well cast as Chris and this week I guess we see his vulnerable side and self-guilt come to the fore.

I also liked how one specific character was left to live another day. It’s potential for another story for these characters down the line and that itself was well handled.

I’m excited to see the story change direction a little next week for the finale. However, in terms of wrapping up this side of the plot, I felt like Episode 7 could have done more.

Everyone’s a Critic

So here’s where I had issues with Episode 7. The lack of weight! What I mean by that is that is this. We are in a world where the Nazi’s won WWII, an alt-world scenario used by countless sci-fi properties over the years. So many, it’s almost entrenched in our subconscious, or at least it is at my age.

This means we have a variety of examples to draw upon when comparing who did it best. At the high end, we have something like The Man in the High Castle, a phenomenal series with a very powerful message. It has real ‘weight’ to it. Now, I don’t expect Peacemaker to try and go into Schindler’s List level of filmmaking. However, this is a pretty toothless Nazi world for those with the right skin colour.

Outside of the lack of POC, it seems like the white Americans are pretty much in Freedom Land. There’s no kind of processing of how horrific this could be, the likes of Ad’s or Judo Master are never really faced with the reality of this world. At least, not beyond the chase of Ad’s that we finished off with in Episode 6.

Pointless

They all end up back at the Alt-Auggie/Chris/Keith house and we learn that not is all as we’d expect when it comes to Auggie in particular. (Which, I liked by the way, that was well done.) Yet, when the police show up to Auggie’s it feels like we are back in the real world. Warrants? This is a fascist police state, surely where no one has rights above the state unless you are the big boss, or his personal power circle? A friend pointed out that The Trio are celebrity heroes in this world, and perhaps they get more leeway. However, given what Chris has done prior to this…

It’s not just one thing though to be honest. It feels like it was all done for comedy alone and there was no real true downside shown to the Nazi world (outside of Ad’s being chased down the street). In the end, it could have not been a Nazi world, but something else Chris didn’t like and the story doesn’t change. Make it a… satanist world where only worship of a satanic figure is allowed. The basic story stays the same, you just have different clues in earlier episodes.

If you are going with a specific idea, lean into it and show us some of the darkness, it is an adult series after all. If the idea can be changed for another that easily, then it’s not actually important. In fact, it’s completely pointless.

As for that chase of Ad’s… Nah, that’s poorly executed, even in a comedy series for me. No body shaming here, but the Ad’s character is a big girl. That’s just a fact. Yet the entire street all manage to follow here the exact same distance behind, despite all starting from different places. They never gain on her, she never tires, it looks completely on obviously staged.

She then jumps in a pool, which means she’s caught in the real world. The pursuers only have to walk to the other end of the pool and they have her surrounded. Instead, they all swarm into the pool like it’s a zombie chase so that they can be easily dispatched by Judo Master. It was in my opinion poorly executed and is one of several times in this episode that any ‘weight’ is lifted by always choosing the comedy option.

GRADE: C+

I’m still enjoying the Season, but this semi-finale episode never made use of out the premise they set up. It feels like next week won’t deal with Nazi world, but where else that portal can access. I could be wrong, but if that’s it for the alt-world part of the story, then it’s disappointing for me.

I still look forward to the Season finale, but unless it blows me away, then Season 2 will go down as a weaker Season than the first for me, overall.
