Pedro Pascal’s The Mandalorian Prompts Rule Change At Golden Globes

Pedro Pascal’s The Mandalorian has prompted The Golden Globes to change a rule regarding their award process. As fans probably know Pascal’s face was only seen on screen during Star Wars: The Mandalorian in one scene. The rest of the time Pascals’ voice was heard, but his face was covered. This would normally have meant that Pascal’s performance was not eligible for a Golden Globe Award.

However, a new report from Variety says that rule is about to change. The Golden Globes has now changed this rule, specifically to account for characters wearing masks. The idea, is that even though Pascal’s face wasn’t shown, it was him under that mask. But, was it? Didn’t we hear from showrunner John Favreau recently that they had already began filming before Pascal was even officially cast? If there was another actor under that mask for much of the show, then for those scenes Pascal’s role was merely a voice over.

Now, I guess we don’t know exactly how much of The Mandalorian was shot without Pascal on set. Perhaps it was only a few scenes at most? What’s more it does not really effect the Golden Globes yet, because Pascal’s performance was not even nominated. Therefore there is no real drama here, however it probably means Pascal would be eligible if worthy in Season 2. I expect Pascal will be present and correct for the full of the Season 2 shoot, so there wouldn’t be an issue with a nomination.

With all the fantasy, superhero, and sci-fi shows we have coming up, this is probably a smart move for the Globes. Marvel, Star Wars, The Witcher, DCEU, The Lord of the Rings, Wheel of Time, and so and so forth. All of these properties have potential for masked characters, so I think this rule change was needed. Though, some shows like DC’s Doom Patrol have one actor playing the part on screen, and another doing the voice work. Clearly these character performances would not be eligible under these new guidelines.
