The road is littered with all the failed novel series adaptations. For every Hunger Games, you have films like The Golden Compass, Inkheart, and of course Percy Jackson. Though you can’t say 20th Century Fox didn’t try with that last franchise. They not only made one movie, but two of them, and while they weren’t exactly box office bombs, they didn’t exactly set the world on fire.

Off its $90 million budget, the second Percy Jackson movie made just north of $200 million, likely resulting in just breaking even or even a mild loss. Either way, its downward trajectory from the $226.4 million-grossing original pretty much left it as a non-starter franchise.

But, as we have learned with shows like His Dark Materials, a previous failed adaptation doesn’t necessarily mean a book series is doomed. There is always a potential in the future, and in this particular case, with Disney acquiring 20th Century Fox, and likely the Percy Jackson rights in the process, there is reported talks (via We Got This Covered) that there will be a reboot of the franchise that will stream.

Of course, the natural place for it to stream could be Disney+, but that isn’t necessarily a given. Either way, with there being five books in the Percy Jackson series, there is plenty of material for the studio to mine, and that’s not even mentioning the other series that author Rick Riordan put together.
