Peter Dinklage has just locked down his next big paycheck. According to Variety, the Game of Thrones actor has signed on to both star in and produce Rumpelstiltskin, which is being developed over at Sony.
As the name would suggest, the film is based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, which tells the story of a girl whose father lies to a king, telling the king that his daughter can spin straw into gold. This girl is aided by the titular Rumpelstiltskin into spinning straw into gold, but in return, agrees to give away her firstborn child.
The actual plot of the film is being kept under wraps, but it’s a safe assumption that this film will be some sort of play on that original premise. The movie is currently in development at Sony, but at this time, it’s not expected to be Dinklage’s next movie after he’s done on Game of Thrones, but it is mentioned that the project is a priority for both him and the studio.
On board to write the script is author/screenwriter Patrick Ness, along with Karen Rosenfelt, Circle of Confusion‘s Matt Smith and David Alpert. Given Ness’ recent work on his own A Monster Calls script, it seems likely this movie could share the same DNA of storytelling in terms of its tone and style, but that’s just an assumption on my part.
