Peter Galison knew he was at the crossroads of scientific discovery and history. With the efforts of many scientists, physicists, and astronomers, the worldwide effort led to a carefully planned operation in Black Holes: The End of All We Know documentary to reveal the first image of a black hole.

With this scientific journey, it may lead to unlocking the secrets of the universe.

The documentary included Shep Doeleman, founding director of the Event Horizon Telescope, physicist Andrew Strominger, theoretical physicist Malcolm Perry, CEO Unity Sasha Haco, and the late Stephen Hawking.

What can black holes teach us about the boundaries of knowledge? These holes in spacetime are the darkest objects and the brightest—the simplest and the most complex. With unprecedented access, Black Holes: The Edge of All We Know follows two powerhouse collaborations. Stephen Hawking anchors one, striving to show that black holes do not annihilate the past. Another group, working in the world’s highest-altitude observatories, creates an earth-sized telescope to capture the first-ever image of a black hole. Interwoven with other dimensions of exploring black holes, these stories bring us to the pinnacle of humanity’s quest to understand the universe.

LRM Online’s talked with professor and documentarian Peter Galison on recording the journey and exploits of the participants of the Event Horizon Telescope expedition to capture the first image of the black hole.

Peter Galison is a physicist and historian of science at Harvard University. In 1997, he was named a MacArthur Fellow with his Event Horizon Telescope colleagues. Last year, he shared the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics for the first image of a black hole. He is a co-founder of the Black Hole Initiative at Harvard, a center of study of these most extreme objects. Other films he directed included Ultimate Weapon: The H-Bomb Dilemma, Secrecy, and Containment. He authored several books, including “Image and Logic,” “Objectivity,” with L. Daston and “Einstein’s Clocks, Poincare’s Maps.”
