Pirates Of The Caribbean Reboot Could Bring Back Jack Sparrow After All? | LRM’s Barside Buzz

Could the Pirates of the Caribbean reboot bring back Jack Sparrow and Johnny Depp? Read on!

Apparently, you all love your Jack Sparrow. Last week, we reported on the news that Jumanji star Karen Gillan could be Pirates of the Caribbean-bound. More specifically, she could act as the female lead of the rebooted franchise. What wasn’t clear at the time was whether or not it meant that Johnny Depp’s time as Captain Jack Sparrow was up. Of course, Jack Sparrow was the supporting character-turned-lead of the entire franchise.

Throughout it all, he was the main consistent factor, for better and worse. And many of you love him. I know there were several tweet replies to our story with you all saying you wouldn’t watch a Pirates of the Caribbean movie without him. I mean…if the box office was any indication, there were a lot of you that didn’t go anyway, but that’s neither here no there. If you are a Jack Sparrow die-hard, I may have some good news for you.

This latest report comes from Disinsider editor-in-chief Skyler Shuler. In a recent tweet, he stated the following.

“Hearing from different people that PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN could be a “soft reboot,” like BUMBLEBEE. So, Sparrow could possibly be involved, I don’t if that means starring role or cameo, or just a film in the same universe.

Just things I keep hearing.”

Well, that would be interesting in a couple of ways. First, let’s talk about the “soft reboot” nomenclature.

The Soft Reboot

I’ll be frank. I don’t consider Bumblebee to be a soft reboot. As far as I’m concerned, it virtually undoes everything in the subsequent Transformers canon. For starters, we have the difference in design among the different Autobots. No longer are they jagged edges of metal, but are instead made of more simplistic, rounded parts. This includes Optimus Prime, who doesn’t resemble his former Michael Bay self.

With this in mind, I look to the supposed Pirates of the Caribbean “soft reboot” claim and can’t help but wonder what it means. Does this mean they will feel okay with mixing around canon and going forward only cherry-picking specific things, ignoring everything else? So, if Jack Sparrow is involved, could we expect that the exploits in the films are all canon?

I’ll admit, this is likely me thinking too hard about a throwaway tweet. Perhaps it was simply a poor example from Shuler on the whole deal, but it’s hard not to think about what the term “soft reboot” means.

Jack Sparrow’s Return

Of course, the big piece of here is Jack Sparrow’s potential return to the big screen. He’s had a heck of a time over the course of several films, but it’s time that he took a back seat. But what is the best way to utilize him in a film? Assuming Johnny Depp returns, what do we want to see from the character?

Personally, I do think his being thrust into the lead character role was a bad move on Disney’s part. As great as he was, he worked so much better as a side character. In that first movie, you get the impression he’s someone who’s a lot smarter than he lets on, almost purposely playing up his mannerisms to disarm his enemies. By the time Dead Men Tell No Tales came out, he’d turned into a lucky buffoon.

Putting him in a secondary role would be the ideal way to go, in my opinion. First off, it gives us more Jack Sparrow than a knowing cameo would bring, but not so much that his novelty is worn. Just give us that middle-ground Disney. We all love Jack Sparrow early on. Give us a reason to love him again, and don’t resort to a cheap one-off appearance.

Of course, as with all rumors, take this with a grain of salt. The Disinsider editor-in-chief didn’t even see fit to publish this on his own site, so keep that in mind.
