Pokémon Sword & Shield Trailer Shows Off New Rivals And New Forms Of Old Pokémon

As much as I love Pokémon, the reality is that the franchise is mostly iterative in nature. Very rarely do we get any game-changing features, and it’s because of this slow, incremental growth that I find myself hopping on board every five years or so (at most). While Pokémon Sword and Shield is the series’ first mainline console entry, they don’t look like they’ll be changing up that pattern.

If you’ve been online, you know there has already been a lot of controversy surrounding this game, with fans complaining about the dev’s decision NOT to include every Pokémon ever created, as well as the underwhelming graphical nature of the thing. But the dev apparently has some surprises left.

In the new trailer for the game (shown above), they introduce Galarian versions of fan-favorite Pokémon, including Weezing, Zigzagoon, and others. Additionally, they have introduced a new Pokémon called Morpeko who has a Full-Belly mode and a Hangry mode.

Finally, they introduce two new rivals in the form of Bede and Marnie, the latter of whom has a bunch of groupies named Team Yell who are set to cause a lot of trouble for the players.

Is this enough to help sate the rabid Pokémon fans? I don’t think so. As stated above, this all feels iterative instead of game-changing in nature. This game was an opportunity to really reignite enthusiasm for an already-huge property, but instead, they’re treating it like business as usual, which is unfortunate.
