Poms Actress Rhea Perlman Believes Age Is A Social Constructs

Every day, we inch that much closer to death. If you want to get really nihilistic about it, that’s pretty much one way to look at it. Once we get past a certain age, we tend to mellow out a bit, and become less active over time. But, of course, not everyone is like that, and the further along we get in time, the more it seems evident that there are plenty of folks out there with plenty of life left to live, even as they get older.

That’s something that the upcoming film Poms celebrates. In the film, a woman moves to a retirement home and, of all things, decides to start a cheerleading squad with some fellow residents. The film stars many talented actresses like Diane Keaton, Jackie Weaver, and Rhea Perlman, and of course, many of them have strong opinions on the subject of aging. While attending a roundtable promoting the film, Perlman discussed her perspective on the subject, saying:

“I feel like there is no such thing as age. I feel like it’s a social construct. It just drives me crazy because I remember when I was a way different age … I’m not even going to say younger, but I would look at people who were only 40 maybe and they’d already be hunched over and you could feel the weight of the world on them. Why is that? My parents really fought against that I think, themselves. They stayed active, they lived until their 90’s, and they tried to stay active as long as they possibly could, and keep their brains going, and they had friends, and traveled and did all that stuff and they never let it bother them. And as long as it doesn’t hold you down, you don’t get sick and you have the energy, I think you thinking that you can’t do something just because ‘old people can’t do this,’ that’s really counterproductive.”

As someone who’s only in his 30s and who acts old as sin, maybe it’s something I can actually take to heart…

Poms is out in theaters now!
