I’ll begin this article with the caveat that currently this is being classed a wild rumor and nothing more. After all, anyone can jump onto the internet and claim anything, and they do, whether we believe what they tell us is a different story.
The rumor comes from a user called BrotherDameron on Reddit who claims to have been told by someone in the know at CBS that during the Superbowl, they have a segment slot ready for Star Wars: Episode 9 teaser. The user claims his source has informed him that as yet, they have been given no footage for this slot and that it is listed as ‘Existing Star Wars: Episode 9 teaser”. This has prompted BrotherDameron and other fans to conclude that this may mean a release date of said teaser trailer within the next 2 weeks, prior to the Superbowl 53 coverage.
Currently, the moderators of this sub-Reddit are trying to verify the user’s claims in confidence (so he does not have to reveal his source). If this is possible, then it could be upgraded to a leak or a high probability rumor. Whether BrotherDameron actually goes through this process remains to be seen and until it happens, we have to stress again that this could simply be someone trying to cause a media stir with false claims.
What is interesting is that for those of us who follow the normal marketing of these movies we can start to see patterns and predict reveals with certain franchises and studios. Going by the marketing for previous Star Wars movies The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. This seems about the right time to have a very minimal teaser with a simple title reveal. Now that doesn’t mean we can add some weight to this rumor, in fact, it’s possible the user was also aware of this and used the timeline to get more exposure for their fun.
What I will say is that I would not be surprised at all to find that by the time the Superbowl hits on February 3rd, that we know the title of Star Wars: Episode 9. If we are talking a small teaser here alone, I think we get, if anything, one shot followed by the title and the release date, and that’s irrespective of whether it hits in the next 2 weeks or not.
Maybe Lucasfilm is looking to change their marketing strategy for Star Wars: Episode 9, but if not, there’s a good bet we will get something sooner rather than later. If this report gets verified properly I will update with the latest information as we find it.
