Todd Phillips’ Joker starring Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Curry, who by the end of the film is transformed into the Clown Prince of Crime, was supposed to be a dangerous film that was going to incite all kinds of violence across the country because of the themes of the film. But none of that happened. First, it premiered at the Venice International Film Festival and won the Golden Lion award. Then most critics were very kind to the film and its latest achievement, crossing the $1 billion mark, which is important as it is the first R-rated film to do so. Most of us out there have seen the film and it’s been well received by audiences everywhere. It looks like it also has gained another fan in the White House.
According to Yahoo! News via CNN’s Shimon Prokupecz, President Trump hosted a showing of Joker at the White House. This was then later confirmed by a senior White House official that said that the screening was for “family, friends, and some staff.” The same official also stated that the President liked the film although no further details were given.
President Trump is a self-proclaimed movie buff (as he claims he is for many things), who frequently has screenings at the White House. He also regularly screens films on his private plane. One of his favorite films is 1988’s Jean-Claude Van Damme’s classic Bloodsport. He also has a connection to the long line of Batman films as in 2012’s Dark Knight Rises directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne, included scenes that were shot at his Manhattan headquarters, Trump Tower.

Back when Joker was announced to be in development, I would have never bet that it would reach this kind of overall success. Especially when there were groups out there actively trying to get people to boycott the film, followed by precautions about possible shootings. I am glad to see a director like Phillips taking a chance with a different take on a character that I am honestly getting tired of seeing so much and making it such a huge success.
