Prime Video has officially unveiled the trailer for Soul Power: The Legend of the American Basketball Association, a four-part documentary event chronicling the meteoric rise and eventual fall of the ABA, the rebellious basketball league that forever changed the sport. All four episodes will premiere February 12, exclusively on Prime Video, streaming in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
Directed by Kenan Kamwana Holley, Soul Power is the first docuseries to tell the complete story of the American Basketball Association, which launched in 1967 and spent nine unforgettable seasons challenging the NBA both on and off the court. Set against one of the most turbulent cultural periods in American history, the series explores how the ABA’s fearless innovation reshaped professional basketball and laid the groundwork for the modern game.
The docuseries dives deep into the league’s lasting influence, from introducing the 3-point shot and the slam dunk contest, to accelerating player empowerment and expanding opportunities for women in the business of sports. It also highlights how former ABA franchises including the Brooklyn Nets, Denver Nuggets, Indiana Pacers, and San Antonio Spurs became integral parts of the NBA following the leagues’ historic merger. Notably, 2026 marks the 50th anniversary of that merger.
Soul Power also celebrates the stars and architects who defined the ABA’s legacy, spotlighting icons such as Julius “Dr. J” Erving, Moses Malone, George Gervin, Spencer Haywood, Rick Barry, and coaching legend George Karl. Through interviews with basketball legends, cultural voices, and historians, the series argues that today’s NBA simply wouldn’t exist in its current form without the ABA’s bold vision and willingness to challenge the status quo.

Presented by Prime Video Sports, the docuseries boasts an impressive slate of executive producers, including Grammy, Emmy, and Academy Award winner Common, Julius Erving, Todd Lieberman of Hidden Pictures, George Karl and Brett Goldberg of Truth+Media, and director Kenan Kamwana Holley. The project also received support from Scott Tarter, Founder and CEO of Lana Sports and Co-Founder and CEO of the Dropping Dimes Foundation, which has worked for more than a decade to support retired ABA players’ financial and health needs.
A co-production between Prime Video Sports, Truth+Media, Hidden Pictures, and Holley Films, Soul Power: The Legend of the American Basketball Association promises to be a definitive look at how a short-lived league left a permanent mark on basketball, sports culture, and American history.
Basketball fans and history buffs alike can stream all four episodes when Soul Power premieres on February 12, exclusively on Prime Video.
