Personality clashes as one’s perfect life gets turned upside down in this thriller series, The Girlfriend, on Prime Video. Composer Ruth Barrett was tasked to compose musical scores depicting two very different women who go toe-to-toe in the series.

The series stars Olivia Cooke (Ready Player One, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) as Cherry, the younger woman introduced to the family through the boyfriend of the mother, Laura, played by Robin Wright (Forrest Gump, Beowulf). Other supporting cast members included Laurie Davidson (Mary & George, A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story), Waleed Zuaiter (London Has Fallen, The Men Who Stare at Goats), Karen Henthorn (Coronation Street, EastEnders), Tanya Moodie (Empire of Light, Motherland), and Shalom Brune-Franklin (Baby Reindeer, Dune: Prophecy).

Wright and Andrea Harkin direct The Girlfriend series.

Based on Michelle Frances’ novel of the same name, The Girlfriend follows Laura (Wright), a woman who seemingly has it all: a glittering career, a loving husband, and her previous son, Daniel. Her perfect life begins to unravel when Daniel brings home Cherry (Cooke), a girlfriend who changes everything. After a tense introduction, Laura becomes convinced Cherry is hiding something. Is she a manipulative social climber, or is Laura just paranoid? The truth is a matter of perspective.

LRM Online has the exclusive premiere of two composition scores from Ruth Barrett in the series. One track embodied the Cherry character, while the other represented Laura, the mother.

In the composition of Laura, who is paranoid about the young girl introduced into the family, Barrett needed to capture the struggling emotions the character is battling.

“’Secret Love’ has a mysterious, nostalgic, emotional feel, hinting at what Laura might be hiding,” stated Ruth Barrett in this composition.

As for Cherry, Barrett’s approach towards young women is more energetic and playful.

“’Rock Star’ is pure Cherry—bold, ambitious, seductive, fearless, and fun. Whose side do you think you’re on?” said Barrett of this track.

Ruth Barrett is one of the most sought-after composers based in the United Kingdom. She earned an Emmy nomination in 2017 in the “Outstanding Music Composition for a Series” for PBS’ Victoria. Her other television and film credits included Netflix series Bodyguard, NBC’s Law & Order: Organized Crime, Netflix’s The Decameron, Prime Video’s The Terminal List and The Terminal List: Dark Wolf, and PBS’ mini-series of Sandition, The Durrells, and Wuthering Heights. Also, she co-scored with Steffen Thum on The Old Guard 2 and co-scored with Martin Phipps for Harry Brown.
