Profiling Some Of The Best Poker Strategies

Profiling some of the best poker strategies

Poker is a popular card game played by over 100 million people worldwide, and here are a few reasons why:

  • There are no entry requirements
  • Poker rules are easy to grasp.
  • Some online platforms offer players the chance to trail with a poker no deposit bonus, meaning they can get a feel for the game and potentially win money without spending any of their own.
  • This popular card game gives people the chance to build new skills.
  • Poker is exciting to play, especially when there’s a chance to win money, or a title.
  • There is an element of luck but also skill and strategy needed to play poker, which we’ll explore in this post.

There are numerous strategies players can use to improve their game and amp up their chances of winning. To find out more, read below for three strategies you can use.

1 – Learn Poker Hand Rankings

It seems obvious but learning how to play poker properly is the first step. Part of which, is learning all of the hand rankings in poker.

So, if you’re unsure what these are, now is the time to learn.

Below you can find each hand ranking starting with the highest and moving down to the weakest hand. To learn which sets of cards paired together from the deck are strong contenders in a game of poker, read and memorize the below.

  • Royal Flush – 10, J, Q, K, A in the same suit
  • Straight Flush – Five cards in a sequence and the same suit
  • Four of a kind – Four cards of the same value in each suit
  • Full house – Three cards with the same denomination and two cards with different values
  • Flush – Five cards in the same suit
  • Straight – Sequence of five cards in any suit
  • Three of a kind – Three cards with the same value in different suits and two unmatched cards
  • Two pairs – Two sets of two cards with the same value, and a fifth card in any denomination
  • One pair – A pair with the same denomination plus three unmatched cards
  • No pair – Each card has a different rank and suit

Remembering the above will allow players to identify a good hand when they have one.

2 – Choose Your Position Wisely

The seat a player takes at the poker table is important because it affects the hands they and their opponents can play.

Here’s a rundown of a 6-max poker seating plan and the advised methods of play for each position.

1st position, Early Position, EP

In this seat, it’s essential to play only with a high-ranking hand but play with caution.

2nd position, Middle Position, MP

This position is better than EP with the scope to play more hands, but players should still play cautiously and tight in the opening range.

3rd position, Cut Off, CO

An advantageous position for players, with opportunities to steal blinds with marginal holdings.

4th position, Button, BTN

This is the best place to sit. The button will always have the upper hand because they can see what the other players do after the flop. Plus, there are only two opponents behind the buttons pre-flop. So the button can play aggressively and open with most of their hands.

5th position, Small Blind, SB

If everyone folds before reaching the SB, this player can play with over half their hands.

6th position, Big Blind, BB

The big blind sits in the last position. The BB is disadvantaged because they need to post before seeing their hand.

On the plus side, if all players fold, the BB wins. But, if there’s a raise, a strategy is needed to assess the raiser’s position and potential hand.

In summary, earlier positions should play tight, and most mid to late positions can afford to play aggressively and loose.

This part of the game takes some getting used to but should always be considered when deciding where to sit at the poker table, and which hands to play with.

3 – Play Low Stakes Poker Games

To understand the ins and out of poker, it’s crucial, to begin with, to play low-stakes games. This saves players from spending and losing a lot of money from the start.

It also gives them room to process different approaches to poker and worry less about how much money they’ve bet on the game.

Plus, low-stakes games are more likely to have contenders with a similar understanding of poker, meaning the player has a higher chance of winning.

On the other hand, high-stakes games tend to have lots of experienced players. So, any newcomer caught up in a high-stakes game is more likely to lose and miss a chance to develop their knowledge of poker.

The three poker strategies will enable players to grasp crucial parts of the game that could affect their chance of winning or losing.
