Psychological Goodnight Mommy To Get English-Language Remake

A couple years back, my wife and I sat down to watch a family-favorite classic, Goodnight Mommy. Okay, yeah, maybe not the kind of film you’d actually want to watch with your family, but it was a surprisingly strong psychological thriller that I’d recommend to any film fan.

According to Deadline, Animal Kingdom and Playtime have started to put together a package for an English-language remake of the acclaimed movie. At the helm of the flick is Take Me to the River director Matt Sobel, with Kyle Warren. Although it’s not clear in the report which Kyle Warren the outlet is talking about, it seems like a safe assumption it’s the same one that’s working as a writer for the Lethal Weapon TV series.

The original film was directed by Veoronika Franz and Severin Fiala and followed the return of a mother who just underwent some kind of facial surgery. Her twin sons, Elias and Lukas, however, have a sneaking suspicion that the woman hiding beneath those bandages really isn’t their mother.

“My favorite films are those that invite the audience to step inside their protagonist’s journey,” Sobel told the outlet. “Whether fear of abandonment, or the dreadful realization that those closest to us may not be who they seem, our re-imagining of Goodnight Mommy aims to create an immersive nightmare, with visceral sensations front and center.”

English-language remakes are not a new thing. Two high-profile remakes of the same nature are David Fincher’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and Matt Reeves’ Let Me In, both of which received as much, if not more, critical acclaim than their originals.

I’m interested to see what they plan on doing differently with this adaptation to justify its existence.
