Things are starting to look up for Steven Spielberg’s pop culture opus, Ready Player One. The film opened yesterday in theaters across the country, and has already bagged a solid $12 million. This is indeed quite the auspicious beginning, though it’s worth noting that these are not early screening sales (which usually begin around 6 pm or 7 pm), but rather a full day’s worth of sales. Unlike most films, it full-on opened in the morning on Thursday, giving it an extra bit of padding for the weekend.
But things are still looking good for the film, as it’s now tracking to break $50 million in its opening Easter weekend. This is up a bit from tracking earlier this week, which had it pegged around $45 million, and it’s way up from tracking earlier this month, which had it predicted to hit closer to $35 million.

Without a doubt, this movie is facing some positive momentum thanks to critics mostly enjoying it. As it stands, the movie is at a “Certified Fresh” rating of 77 percent. It may not be glowing, but most seem to have had a great time with this experience overall and are enjoying Spielberg’s return to his adventure-focused films.
The CinemaScore has also come in on this one with a solid A-. This means that general audiences who had a chance to see the film were pretty happy about what they saw. All in all, this score gauges how they felt about the film given the expectations set by the trailer. With an A- under its belt, it’s possible that the film has good word-of-mouth, giving it longer legs in the weeks to come.
