Rejoice The Mummy fans as the release date has been set for the reboot/sequel and both Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are confirmed to return. This was looking likely and Fraser’s return seemed tied into that. However, Weisz famously only appeared in two of the three main series movies, her role being recast for The Mummy 3.
As per THR,
‘Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz have a date with The Mummy.’
‘After months of negotiations, Universal has closed deals for the pair to star in a new installment of the studio’s turn-of-the-century action horror comedy. The film is being directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, also known as Radio Silence.’
‘And with deals finally closed, Universal has also set a release date for the feature, announcing Tuesday a May 19, 2028, wide opening.’
‘Plot details are being kept under wraps, but it is known that the actors will return to their roles of Rick and Evelyn O’Connell. Fraser led the trio of movies made between 1999 and 2008, while Weisz starred in the first two.’

So, great, right? Only, I feel like perhaps we are seeing the franchise once again take a cue from Indiana Jones. Fraser is 57, Weisz is 55, which is not old, but it’s most probably beyond the point of jumping around fighting Mummies and the like.
For a movie that tried to be the new Indiana Jones, I thought the first film was watchable and the sequels got increasingly worse. Therefore, to me, who wasn’t that much of a fan back in the day, this is just usual Hollywood nostalgia cash in. However, the studio must be paying decent wages because both leads are back.
So what do you think about Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz back for The Mummy in 2028? Thoughts below.
