Released Image of Cress Williams As Black Lightning Hits The Web

While DC Comics properties are struggling on the big screen, there is no doubt that they have found their groove on the small screen. Since the debut of Arrow in 2012, he as been joined by The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl and have been successful enough to be picked up for yet another season. Thanks to these shows we have been able to see a a huge variety of characters that would have never made it to the big screen. Now they will be joined by yet another hero, Black Lightning.

As already reported the CW has ordered a pilot for Black Lightning, which has officially started production in Atlanta. Today the CW and Warner Bros. TV have released our first look at Cress Williams in costume as Black Lightning, you can check out the image below. Looking at the image it has a very similar style as the artwork for the other super hero shows on The CW. The costume was designed by Laura Jean Shannon, who also worked on films like The Jungle Book and Iron Man. The executive producers for Black Lightning are Greg Berlanti, Salim Akil, Mara Brock and Sarah Schechter and the pilot is being directed by Salim Akil who also wrote the script. COMINGSOON.NET has an interview with Salim Akil in which he talks about his background with Jefferson Pierce aka Black Lightning.

For a little background on the character, Black Lightning is one of the first major African American superheroes published by DC Comics. He made his first appearance in his self titled book Black Lightning #1 in April of 1977. He was created by writer Tony Isabella with artwork by Trevor Von Eeden. His real name is Jefferson Pierce and he has the ability to create and manipulate electromagnetic fields. In one instance he even restarted Superman’s heart when he almost died from Kryptonite exposure. Although he was born with these metahuman abilities, he keeps them hidden until later in his life. During his time as a high school principle one of his students becomes a victim of gang violence. With the threats of gangs growing he finally becomes Black Lightning to protect his home town. He has had affiliations with both the Justice League and the Outsiders.

I cannot wait to see this Black Lightning in action. It will be interesting to see if they in fact keep him separate from the rest the current DC CW superhero universe or not. Given that we already know the formula they use for these heroes I would like to see what original ideas Salim Akil brings to this pilot.
