Renfield: Chris McKay To Direct Universal’s Monster Movie

Renfield

Renfield has found a director. Deadline reports that Chris McKay (The Lego Batman Movie, The Tomorrow War) has joined Universal’s “MonsterVerse.” No, not the one with Godzilla Vs. Kong. No, not Dark Universe. You know, the latest one, with the untraditional, yet effective reimagining of The Invisible Man (2020).

Never heard of Renfield? While not being a character to carry his own franchise, he does come from the novel Dracula. R.M. Renfield is an inmate at an insane asylum who is actually a servant of Dracula. Everyone one else assumes the man is simply mad.

Like The Invisible Man, the film will be set in modern day and is not as traditional as the usual Universal Monster film. Insiders say the story’s mix of humor and action attracted the studio to do a film about Renfield instead of a traditional Dracula movie. The studio is also set to be happy to release something not as scary as The Invisible Man, to show their Monster movies can transcend genre like Marvel Studios.

Though Universal is no longer trying to tie all their Monster movies into a Dark Universe, other projects on the way are Wolfman starring Ryan Gosling and Van Helsing with James Wan producing.
