It’s been a while since I’ve written about The Last Jedi, I thought there was nothing left to say. Until we hear Rian Johnson considered using Anakin instead of Yoda’s Force Ghost, and that’s still news years later. The Last Jedi for better or worse will be discussed and debated for a long time to come. If you are new to reading LRM, then I’ll just say up front I was one of those in the negative camp.
Anyway, let’s get to the story shall we? One of the things fans wanted to see in the frankly poorly designed Star Wars sequel trilogy was Anakin Skywalker. After all, the first six episodes of Star Wars were focused on Anakin’s rise, fall and subsequent redemption. So having Anakin appear as a Force Ghost to Luke is something fans had longed to see. Cue one fan asking Rian Johnson if he ever considered using Anakin’s Force Ghost?
Briefly for the tree burning scene, but luke’s relationship was with Vader not really anakin, which seemed like it would complicate things more than that moment allowed. Yoda felt like the more impactful teacher for that moment.

This is a tricky one, because I think I agree with Johnson here, yet also felt Anakin was missing. In that moment when Yoda appeared, it felt right that it be Yoda. In fact, the scene was one of my favorite moments from the movie. However, if I am being greedy, and why not, I’d have liked to see them both. Maybe things begin with Yoda, and the Anakin appears uses the lightning to ignite the tree? That would have perhaps been an even cooler moment that satisfied fans Anakin curiosity?
Saying all that, my issues with The Last Jedi were many and varied, and not really about that moment. When it comes to Anakin Skywalker, he was hardly mentioned much across three movies other than by Kylo Ren. The overall absence of Anakin, and the lessening of what he achieved through Luke’s guidance was my main issues with the sequel trilogy. The entire story felt like a sequel rather than the closing chapters of the same story. That cannot be said of the first six episodes of the saga, despite the prequels being poorly executed.
