Oh, the insanity a few minutes of television could cause in the world, and all over sauce? Let’s go back and briefly explain the insanity of McDonald’s Szechuan Sauce.

This all started out on June 19, 1998 when The Walt Disney Company released the animated feature film Mulan. As part of the marketing for the film, McDonald’s released a limited time Szechuan teriyaki dipping sauce that came with the chicken McNuggets. Once the promotion for the film was over, the sauce was removed from all McDonald’s restaurants.

So almost two decades later, how did this sauce become relevant again? Enter Adult Swim’s popular dark animated comedy Rick and Morty. On April 1, 2017 during the first episode of the third season in a dream sequence, Rick goes to a McDonald’s within his memory to taste the Szechuan sauce one more time. By the end of the episode, he seems to go crazy as he tells Morty that he will one day get more of the precious Szechuan sauce.

Later in July of that year co-creator of Rick and Morty Justin Roiland poster on his Twitter feed that McDonald’s had sent him a four-pound bottle of the sauce with a humorous letter, where they claimed to have recovered it from a dimension where it was always 1998.

Fast forward to October when McDonald’s released an extremely limited amount of the sauce in packaging that looked like the sauce from the show. But this did not end well as the sauce was not available at most locations, and where they did have it, it was in very small quantities. This ended up making the sauce very expensive on eBay. This caused McDonald’s to apologize and to vow to bring it back.

Well, today via a new website called We Want The Sauce, McDonald’s announced that they will be revealing details about the Szechuan sauce’s return on Thursday, February 22nd as part of a three-part podcast titled “The Sauce”. Here is the statement from the website:

“So, come this Thursday, February 22, we’ll not only announce when, where, and how much Szechuan Sauce will be returning. We will also answer those questions and share those stories via a stranger-than-fiction, three-part podcast series: The Sauce.”

It is ridiculous to think how popular something like a nugget sauce could get just by briefly being mentioned on an animated television show. Personally, I have no interest in the sauce, but instead more interested in getting another season of Rick and Morty.
