Rick Grimes Is Off The Walking Dead But His Story Isn’t Over Yet… [SPOILERS]

Disclaimer: This post contains minor spoilers for the most recent episode of The Walking Dead.

Death is always in the air over on The Walking Dead. It’s a show about zombies, for crying out loud. And with that comes the inevitable change in the main core cast, which has cycled through virtually every main character over the course of its nine seasons thus far, and counting. There was a whole lot of hoopla, however, when actor Andrew Lincoln expressed his desire to leave the series after being its primary antagonist since its first episode.

Last night, audiences saw the character Rick Grimes make his final bow from the series…but unlike many other characters, it wasn’t a result of him getting eaten alive or getting his head bashed in. Rick Grimes is alive and will be continuing his story in a trilogy of AMC-original TV movies in the years to come, as The Walking Dead chief content officer Scott M. Gimple revealed to EW:

“It is really important for the audience to know that we are going to be continuing to tell the story of Rick Grimes in these AMC Studios original films. We don’t want this thing to be like, ‘Oh, well, he’ll be back on the show any moment now.’ We are telling Rick’s story in another medium, and it’s going to be these AMC Studios original films. They’re going to be on AMC, most probably. They’re centered around Rick Grimes. We’re going to tell the story of what happens after that helicopter flight, and these are going to be big, epic entertainments. Each are quality films. That’s what’s been happening in the industry. We’ve seen Netflix make these, basically, studio films for people to watch in their homes, and we’re going to be doing the same sort of thing here.”

So what’s going to happen in these movies? Well, we don’t know yet, and it’ll be a good while before we do. Gimple stated they’d likely be shooting it next year, meaning we likely wouldn’t be getting anything until 2020. Additionally, these are supposedly going to be high-quality films in terms of their production value, so expect this to be on the level of something closer to a cable film than a standard network TV film.
