Ridley Scott Thinks There’s Still ‘A Lot Of Mileage’ In The Alien Franchise — But Is There?

It sounds like the Alien franchise may not be done yet. You read. that correctly. After several films, director Ridley Scott thinks there’s still some gas left in the tank. This comes after Alien: Covenant was received fairly poorly by fans and critics alike. And it didn’t help that that film followed the divisive Prometheus. The end result was a film that only grossed $240 million — much less than its predecessor. In spite of Scott being ready to do a sequel, it would seem the future of the Alien franchise was finally halted. But would it be halted forever?

Would the Alien franchise be prevented from ever returning again? I always figured it would disappear for another decade before coming back. In Hollywood, franchise never truly die. I know prior to Alien: Covenant’s release, Scott felt like something needed to change. Speaking recently with The Los Angeles Times, it doesn’t sound like his opinion has changed.

“I still think there’s a lot of mileage in Alien, but I think you’ll have to now re-evolve,” Scott told the outlet. “What I always thought when I was making it, the first one, why would a creature like this be made and why was it traveling in what I always thought was a kind of war-craft, which was carrying a cargo of these eggs. What was the purpose of the vehicle and what was the purpose of the eggs? That’s the thing to question — who, why, and for what purpose is the next idea, I think.”

Luckily, it does seem like he’s not on board with the idea of doing them for the sake of doing them. There has to be a reason behind it, and I think that’s why I’d be on board with seeing another one. While Alien: Covenant felt a bit too much like “more of the same,” I’d hope its performance would be enough to let Scott know things need to change up. But that doesn’t mean we need another movie. Frankly, I’d be surprised if another one would really survive in our current film landscape.

So, my next question is…how do they re-evolve the franchise? How do they continue with this direction without retreading the same old ground over and over again? I’d like to see how they do it or if it’s even possible at this point.

But what do you think? Are you on board with a rebranding of the Alien franchise? Let us know down below!
