Rings of Power First Age flashback rumors this week from our old friend and reliable insider FoF. It has long been rumored that The Rings of Power will feature some flashbacks to events that happened in the First Age. For a start, the first ever promotional image released was 100% from the First Age as there was no Sun or Moon yet. Then we have the image in the header above. Whilst not confirmed, this is believed by many to be Finrod Felagund. Finrod was a character who was killed during that First Age.
Given that The Rings of Power seems led in part by Galadriel, Finrod’s younger sister, it would make sense for us to see some flashbacks through the eyes of Galadriel as she reminisces on her brother’s tragic story.
Well now FoF says that this is indeed Finrod, and it is also him we see from the rear in that original promo shot, Check out the social media post below, but there is more.
EXCL: Galadriel visits Finrod’s tomb in episode one where he was laid to rest after his death and that’s where she gets her dagger.
EXCL: Some elves are sailing West to the undying lands in the first 2 episodes of #LOTRROP#LOTRROP 1/2

Now contained within the video itself, is another piece of information which may excite some Tolkien fans. According to FoF, not seen in the trailer, there is a Balrog in the flashback we see above. Balrog’s were the chief muscle of previous and worse big bad Morgoth. You saw the Balrog in The Fellowship of the Rings fighting Gandalf. Well imagine a whole squad of them, plus the thousands of Orcs and other creatures of Morgoth going into battle.

If you know your Tolkien mythology then things don’t exactly go well for Finrod. Though to be fair, not much goes well for anyone in the First Age. Morgoth and his host were simply an impossible task for the Elves and Men to conquer. It took the Valar themselves to send a host to finally destroy his forces and chain Morgoth. The resulting battle was so destructive that it destroyed the majority of the the Northern parts of Middle-earth. It would therefore make absolute sense if we see a Balrog, or several, involved in any flashbacks.
If this is true, which I don’t doubt, then it shows Amazon can have some access to certain moments within the First Age, even if they are treated as Flashback material. Perhaps the idea was to keep these flashbacks as a surprise of sorts? But, then the first image they release is clearly to any Tolkien fan a scene from the First Age. Very strange.
What do you think of these Rings of Power First Age flashback rumors? Thoughts below as always.
