In a recent interview The Rings of Power showrunners describe the opening Sauron flashback of Season 2’s premiere. Speaking to Total Film magazine on a set visit for the fantasy show’s sophomore season, showrunners Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne confirm the details, teasing a dark opening.
“Do you want to hear the opening?”
“We open in the darkness, an orc walks in, and we see there are thousands of orcs gathered. He’s about to be crowned, pitching his vision of Middle-earth, and right before they lay the crown on his head, his right-hand man, Adar, turns it upside down, and stabs him in the back. It’s the assassination of Sauron.”
These events of course occurred prior to where we come in at the start of Season 1. I still don’t like that after this ‘death’ Sauron decided to make a human looking body. Or that he heads off on a boat west of Middle-earth, which he knows only has Numenor, which he doesn’t seem to be trying to get to. Yet it makes sense that we see what happened between Adar and Sauron. There are some rumors that Orcs join in the stabbing of Sauron.

Oh and for anyone wondering how Sauron can die so easily? Well, he’s just meat like us when he’s in a body. You can ‘kill’ the body, but Sauron (at this point) can easily make another, or exist without one for a time.
Still, in a season said to be Sauron centric, then it makes sense we start with this event teased in Season 1. I just hope the writers actually give us a reason for Halbrand being on that boat. I’m not sure what it could be, but even if I can accept it with some disbelief, I’ll take that.
What do you think as The Rings of Power showrunners describe the opening Sauron flashback of Season 2’s premiere? Does this sound like something you wanted to see in Season 2? Thoughts below as always.
