Rise, LucasFilm Games!

Like Emperor Palpatine or Darth Vader before him, there has been another resurrection in the Star Wars Universe. Lucasfilm Games.

Today via StarWars.com it was revealed that Lucasfilm Games will be the new identity for all game releases based on Lucasfilm intellectual property. Accordingly, new social media accounts were rolled out to coincide with the announcement. The new home of the studio will be @LucasfilmGames on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. Give them a follow! Each of the platforms debuted a new sizzle reel.

LucasArts, the now-defunct game development wing of Lucasfilm, was shuttered shortly after Disney’s purchase of all Lucasfilm assets. Since then, all Star Wars games have been licensed by gaming powerhouse Electronic Arts. No plans for Lucasfilm Games were announced, but it is expected that they will continue to be a licensor of the IP. More on that below.

LucasArts’ catalogue of games spanned from the early 1980’s to the early 2010’s. Titles like Star Wars: Rogue Squadron and Star Wars Episode I: Racer were flagships for the studio, but Star Wars games have fallen on hard times as of late. With today’s announcement, perhaps the glory days of Star Wars videogames are still ahead?

However what does this mean, if anything for the deal Disney currently has with EA? Right now all Star Wars game as developed and published by EA, and there is no news about an end to that deal. Will Lucasfilm Games be producing their own games independent of EA? I guess we will have to wait and see. However, there are plenty of rumors surrounding a sequel to Jedi: Fallen Order on the horizon. So as of right now there is no evidence to suggest a split between Lucasfilm Games and EA.
