Last week, Martin Scorsese had some choice comments for Marvel movies, essentially saying he didn’t really watch them and how they weren’t actually cinema — you know, typical internet stuff where someone who doesn’t consume a genre feels entitled to state their opinion. Obviously, my thoughts on the matter are pretty clear (he’s allowed his opinion, but given that he doesn’t watch the films, his opinions shouldn’t be taken seriously), and there have been others like Karen Gillan and Sam Jackson who have said their piece on the matter.

Now, while speaking with Robert Downey Jr., Howard Stern asked the Avengers: Endgame actor why Scorsese would say that about Marvel movies.

“Because it’s his opinion. I appreciate his opinion because I think it’s like anything. We need all of the different perspectives so we can come to center and move on.”

But then Downey seemed to backpedal a bit on the logic of the actual comment before diving a bit into how some may think that these movies are ruining the art form.

“It’d be like saying Howard Stern isn’t radio. It doesn’t make sense. By the way, there’s a lot to be said for how these genre movies — and I was happy to be part of the problem if there is one — denigrated the artform of cinema. And by the way, when you come in like a stomping beast, and you eliminate the competition in such a demonstrative way, it’s phenomenal.”

Based on Downey’s comments, Stern then asked whether or not he thought the comment came from envy, to which Downey responded:

“Do you actually think Martin Scorsese is upset about Marvel movies?”

Well, I think many of us can agree that Scorsese has no reason to be envious of the success of these Marvel Studios movies, and there seems to be little to indicate that he thinks about them much, based on his comments.
