Legendary actor Robert Redford has announced that his current film, The Old Man & The Gun, will, in fact, be his last. Redford’s impressive acting career has spanned from the ’60s to the present and has also included roles as director and producer.
Entertainment Weekly broke the news when they reported:
“Never say never, but I pretty well concluded that this would be it for me in terms of acting, and [I’ll] move towards retirement after this ’cause I’ve been doing it since I was 21. I thought, Well, that’s enough. And why not go out with something that’s very upbeat and positive?”
Redford said it was actually the film’s framework that helped bring him to the decision to finally check out. In the movie, he plays the role of Tucker, a real-life criminal whose stickups spanned over 60 years.
“To me, that was a wonderful character to play at this point in my life. The thing that really got me about him — which I hope the film shows — is he robbed 17 banks and he got caught 17 times and went to prison 17 times. But he also escaped 17 times. So it made me wonder: I wonder if he was not averse to getting caught so he that could enjoy the real thrill of his life, which is to escape?'”
It’s always sad to see legends retire, but what a career he has blessed us with. The movies I remember watching with my dad were Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Great Gatsby, and The Natural.
The 81-year-old actor will be missed, but luckily we have plenty of his gems to enjoy! What do you think of Redford’s announcement? What were your favorite films of his? Leave your thoughts in the usual spot, and thanks for reading!
