Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is a movie that had more callbacks to the franchise than probably any other film to date. Given the interquel nature of the film, it makes real sense, but given the volume of Easter eggs, it’s easy for them to slip through the cracks.
However, this latest Easter egg that’s been discovered has less to do with it slipping through the cracks, and more with it to do with the fact that no one could have noticed its importance until they had seen Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

What is this Easter Egg? One eagle-eyed Rogue One user noticed Jyn Erso mentioning something called “Hyperspace tracking” when digging through the Empire’s database.
Those who have seen The Last Jedi know that this is how the First Order stays on the tails of the Resistance. So does that mean that the First Order was sitting on the tech for decades? Nope.
Lucasfilm Story Group’s Pablo Hidalgo took to Twitter to both confirm that Easter Egg and screencapped an excerpt (presumably) from the Star Wars: The Last Jedi The Visual Dictionary book. The excerpt delves deeper into hyperspace tracking. Here’s what the excerpt said:
“The next technological terror in Hux’s arsenal is ready to be deployed—active hyperspace tracking. Originally explored in its infancy by the secret Imperial think tank known as the Tarkin Initiative, it has now evolved from theory into reality”
