Rorschach Returns In New DC Black Label Series

DC Black Label’s Rorschach #1 coming this fall!

The classic 1986 DC Comics’ series Watchmen has seen been featured more frequently as of late. In 2017 the limited series Doomsday Clock from Geoff Johns and Gary Frank saw the classic Alan Moore characters be brought into DC continuity. Effects that are still being felt in the latest DC event Dark Nights: Death Metal. There is also the 2019 limited Watchmen TV series on HBO created by Damon Lindelof.

Now this October DC will be launching a brand new comic book titled, Rorschach, a sequel to Watchmen that takes place 35 years after the events of the original series. This will be a 12-issue limited series that they will publish under their DC Black label. Rorschach will be written by none other than one of DC’s most popular writers Tom King. The artwork will be handled by Jorge Fornés, colors by Dave Stewart, and letters by Clayton Cowles.

According to DC, this new series will not be focusing on the original Rorschach Walter Kovacs or his successor Reggie Long. It looks like the series is looking to focus not on a specific character. But the dark legacy that was left behind after he died. It looks like the character or idea may take from the original series and the HBO series as well.

Like in the television series, the comic book will see people in the alternate universe looking to follow his violet example. It will open with a mysterious new Rorschach trying to kill a political challenger to President Robert Redford. They appear to not only fail but be killed in the process. It will then follow a detective’s journey to retrace the assassin’s steps, uncover their identities, and learn what it was they were after.

“Like the HBO Watchmen show and very much like the original ‘86 Watchmen, this is a very political work,” said King in DC’s press release. “It’s an angry work. We’re so angry all the time now. We have to do something with that anger. It’s called Rorschach not because of the character Rorschach, but because what you see in these characters tells you more about yourself than about them.”

If there is any writer that is perfect to write this book it’s King. His writing King likes to make readers think and put puzzle pieces together throughout the run. It’s fun to have to go back to an earlier issue and see the full thought process of a story. This is why I am a huge fan of what he did in Mister Miracle. Also (although I wish they would have let him finish his run with the issues he was supposed to do) his Rebirth Batman run. Currently, he is working his magic again in Strange Adventures.
