According to a new rumor, Joaquin Phoenix is considering a huge offer to make Joker sequels. Specifically the rumor says that Phoenix has been offered $50M to play Joker in two sequels by DC. Joker, considering its budget was a huge success for WB/DC. Arguably, Joker was one of the few real success stories that the DC brand can claim recently. It would not surprise me at all to know that WB want sequels, but will Phoenix be interested?
The rumor does come from British tabloid The Mirror, which always worries me when it comes to scoops. However, because tabloids will actually pay for information, they do get scoops that no one else might come across. The flip side, is that they also at times get taken a loan of by opportunists. However, some tabloids will and do print anything just to get hits. I guess in some ways that’s the same rules a lot of outlets play by isn’t it, (WGTC cough, cough). I am therefore not going to trumpet this as a solid rumor, instead I’ll let you decide for yourself on this one.

What I will say is that previously Joaquin Phoenix has said he is done with the role of Arthur Fleck, aka Joker. I’m not saying that 50 Million bucks won’t change his mind, but that remains to be seen. I would guess that Phoenix would be more interested in the quality of the scripts. The Mirror say that scripts are actively being developed and that WB want to release the second Joker in 2022, with the third in 2024.
Personally, for me, Joker without Batman is like…. Joker without Batman! Was Joker a great little experimental film, yes. Do I want to see a trilogy that has little to do with Batman, no. If Phoenix was going to come back and I was in charge at WB, I’d be offering that truckload of money for a sequel to Matt Reeves The Batman, not a solo movie. However, that probably won’t entice Phoenix back and at the end of the day, there’s money to be made in Joker sequels.
