Ryan Coogler’s X-Files reboot gets a greenlight at Hulu and will star Danielle Deadwyler as one of the FBI agents. This rebooted TV series has been in the works a while. Vince Gilligan recently commented about talking over a few things with Coogler (whom it was reported was attached) to help him out. Gilligan of course was a writer, director and producer on the original series. It’s really Jennifer Yale’s X-Files as she will serve as showrunner, but Coogler was the big name attached.
As per THR,
‘Hulu‘s revival of The X-Files is moving forward and the project has cast its first co-lead. Danielle Deadwyler has landed one of the two coveted starring roles in the series.’
‘In addition, Sinners filmmaker Ryan Coogler — who has long been attached to the show — is now confirmed to both write and direct the pilot, which has been officially greenlit.’
‘The new show’s official description: “Two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.”’
‘Jennifer Yale (See, The Copenhagen Test) will serve as showrunner. The X-Files‘ original creator and showrunner, Chris Carter, will be a non-writing executive producer on the series. Sev Ohanian and Zinzi Coogler, who are Coogler’s partners at their Proximity Media banner, are also non-writing EPs on the show.’
‘Coogler is a great get for Hulu, with the Black Panther director red hot after delivering last year’s most celebrated surprise hit with Sinners, which is nominated for 16 Oscars.’

So, here’s what we don’t know and it created a little debate in our GenreVerse Discord this morning. Will this be a complete reboot or a continuation (set in same Universe) as the original. Some were for either option when we discussed it. I think my preference would be complete reboot, no Mulder or Scully (unless same names of new characters). I personally think it would give them freedom to create their own lore, history and overarching plot lines, without being tied into those well established in the original.
Still, I’ll give it a shot either way and I’ll hope it’s a hit series, there’s not enough out there currently.
