Yesterday, news broke that veteran TV director S.J. Clarkson will develop a female led Marvel movie for Sony. It is thought that Sony have been keen to push ahead with a female led project and Clarkson has been tapped to develop the unnamed project. Clarkson has been a director on many TV shows over the years including the likes of Banshee, Succession, and Marvel’s Jessica Jones.
The news came from Variety, though Sony declined to comment on the story. The trade went on to say that their inside sources thought the movie to be Madame Web. This would not be the first time we have heard some rumor of a Madame Web movie from Sony. However, there appears to be literally no demand for a Madame Web movie from fans, far as I can tell. Scooper Daniel Richtman added to this news by saying he thinks it likely Madame Web, but could be Spider-Woman. Check out the social media post below.
Director S.J. Clarkson signed on to direct an untitled Sony-Marvel movie. Liekly MADAME WEB but could be Spider-Woman

I think one of the comments on Richtman’s piece sums up my own thoughts perfectly.
There’s 5 people on earth that want a Madame Web movie, and 4 of them are disappointed that it’ll be produced by Sony.

Yep, perfect response for me. Every time Sony go into Marvel without Feige and the MCU I die a little inside. Variety‘s own sources seem to prefer Madame Web, and you have to listen to the big trades. Frankly, it sounds like a horrible idea to me, horrible. Madame Web is not a character you build a movie around. I’m also concerned that Variety is reporting Sony want to attach an A-list star first, then develop the script around them. I hate that method of filmmaking, a movie starts with the story, not an actor. If actors were good writers they’d write, but they’re actors.

I’m not saying a script has to be ready to shoot before they cast a lead. However, I’d at least want something that had serious potential before I ever looked at actors. Sigh, I have zero faith in Sony, they consistently prove they are my least liked studio every time they announce something. Then again, maybe this will never happen? How many times have we heard solid reports about Sony’s Marvel properties only for them to never see the light of day? Venom and Morbius are bad enough without Spider-Man, but Madame Web, that’s crazy talk.
