MCU Nova Film Already In Development? | LRM’s Barside Buzz

Some Disney+ show hype as Marvel Exec Brad Winderbaum says Nova is in early development, plus praises both Wonder Man and Ironheart.

Ready to see Nova in the MCU? Marvel Studios may be developing a film as we speak!

I’m a long-time Marvel fan, but the cosmic elements and characters of the Marvel Universe have never held my interest. For that same reason, when Guardians of the Galaxy was due for release back in 2014, like many people, I had little to no expectations for a movie that was surely a risky move for Marvel Studios at the time. Of course, audiences loved the film when it hit. It proved that Marvel could make the more outlandish aspects of its comic universe work on the big screen.

One of the things I enjoyed was how Marvel adapted the Nova Corps to a non-super-powered intergalactic military. It was a great alternative to what could have felt like a carbon copy of DC’s Green Lantern Corps. That said, the Nova Corps’ appearance in the film did raise many people’s hopes of a standalone Nova film.

Now, with the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe front and center in the MCU after the spectacular conclusion to the Infinity Saga in Avengers: Endgame, it looks like we may finally get to meet the MCU’s version of Nova as he’s known from the comics. According to MCU Cosmic, a recent rumor claims that a standalone film starring the Human Rocket is already in some stage of production.

There have been hints of Nova making an appearance in the MCU in the past, with the character making an appearance in early drafts of Guardians of the Galaxy and subsequently Avengers: Infinity War. The latter, as revealed by writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely during an interview with THR, initially featured Nova as the one to warn the Avengers of Thanos’ plans to attack Earth, having suffered a defeat against Thanos during the decimation of Xandar briefly mentioned by Thor in the final version of the film.

In light of how many times the character has almost been included in previous MCU films, it’s certainly not hard to believe that a standalone Nova film might now be in the works, especially when you take into account Kevin Feige’s comments to ComicBook back in 2018 that Nova was one of Marvel’s characters with the most ‘immediate potential’ to make the jump to the big screen.

Assuming we are finally in for a live-action version of the character, it will be interesting to see which incarnation of the hero Marvel chooses to adapt. The two options they have to choose from are Richard Rider or Sam Alexander.

Personally, I think Marvel will opt to go with Sam Alexander. I feel the character’s origin could fit in nicely with the history of the MCU. He also offers an opportunity for established characters to appear in the film. Oh, and we can’t forget that he’d be a perfect fit for the Young Avengers. That team has been rumored at Marvel Studios for a long time, and he’d be primed for it.

In the comics, Sam Alexander grows up hearing his father’s stories of his time as a Nova Corps member. However, he sees them as nothing more than his father’s drunken ramblings. To Sam’s surprise, Rocket and Gamora of the Guardians of the Galaxy later confirm these stories as fact. The pair convinces Sam to follow in his father’s footsteps by donning his helmet and becoming the new Nova.

Perhaps Sam’s MCU origin would follow a similar path. He could inherit the Nova helmet and discover the truth about his father. His dad could have died attempting to defend Xandar from Thanos.

Which version of the character do you hope Marvel Studios will choose to adapt? Let us know in the comments section!
