Director Sam Mendes’s feature output for the 10 years has only consisted of two movies: Skyfall and Spectre. Nothing against those movies, but you can imagine that, as big and all-encompassing those projects are, it didn’t leave room for much else creatively. Now, it sounds like his next project, titled 1917, will help to scratch that creative itch for him — at least it sounds like it based on the new details from IndieWire.

While at CinemaCon, Donna Langley, chairman of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group, presented a whole host of movies coming up, including Mendes’ next one. According to her, the World War I-set movie is supposed to be one long shot. It’s unclear whether or not it’s supposed to be just the illusion of one-shot or if the director will manage to pull off a legit one-shot flick, but either way, the effect is still impressive. Or rather, “immersive,” as Langley stated.

The last one-shot movie I had a chance to see was Alejandro Iñarritu’s Birdman, which featured a bunch of seamless cuts that gave the illusion of one long, off-kilter shot that added to the film’s chaotic feel. It’s quite the accomplishment to pull it off, and paired with the right material, a single shot can do a lot help reinforce a theme of a piece. How will this contribute to the theme of 1917? We’ll have to wait and see.
