MoviePilot caught up with Multiverse of Madness director Sam Raimi on Spider-Man 4. Specifically why that movie never happened and whether Raimi would be open to making it now? Raimi was all set to make a fourth Spider-Man movie starring Tobey Maguire. However as we all know, that movie never materialized. At least not beyond a concept stage. Instead Sony rebooted the franchise into The Amazing Spider-Man.
So why did Spider-Man 4 never happen?
“We had a script years ago and we were actively working in pre-production,” he recalled. “It became a thing where there was a deadline and I didn’t want to make something that was less than great.”
“I thought I had compromised a bit on Spider-Man 3 and I wanted to really pay the audience back on Spider-Man 4 and make the best Spider-Man of all,” Raimi continued. “And I couldn’t get the script together in that amount of time. So I told Sony, ‘I think it’s best if you go ahead with your planned alternate Spider-Man storyline, because I don’t want to let the audience down.'”
I’m sure the compromise Raimi speaks of is the fact he was forced to put Venom in the movie and didn’t want to? As to whether Raimi would consider making Spider-Man 4 now?
“I didn’t think it was possible but after jumping back in with the Multiverse, I realized that anything is possible now so I’m completely open to it.”

Andrew Garfield has said he’s taking a break from acting for a while. To me that means it’s unlikely Sony will be ale to reboot the ASM movies which many fans thought might happen. However perhaps a Spider-Man 4 with Raimi at the helm would be huge at the box office for Sony? As long as they give Raimi complete control and don’t get involved too much. But then that’s not what Sony does, is it? Therefore we will likely just keep getting Sony Spider-Man movies that don’t have Spider-Man in them for eternity. Yay!
What do you think of the comments of Sam Raimi on Spider-Man 4. Would you be keen to see that franchise started up again with an older Peter Parker in Tobey Maguire? Would Raimi be the only choice if that movie were to be developed? As always, share any thoughts in the comments or head over to Discord to chat with other movie geeks and the team.
