Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark Gets Horrifying Super Bowl TV Spots

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is kind of an abnormal property. It’s technically a book series meant to appeal to kids, and if you’ve heard of them, there’s a good chance you were at least exposed to them when you were young. However, that doesn’t make them any less disturbing. More than anything, I have memories of the horrifying illustrations that graced the stories — illustrations that darkened my very soul.

So when I heard this would be adapted into a movie, I wondered what the overall tone would be. Given the source material, would they have to keep the scare factor down in order to make it more appealing for a wide audience? Could this maybe feel more along the lines of Are You Afraid of the Dark? than a true horror film?

Well, that’s the direction I thought they’d take, and boy was I wrong. A couple of new TV spots dropped during yesterday’s big game, and holy crap are they horrifying! Like, seriously, they don’t even look like they’d pass in a PG-13 film. Call me a wimp, but these things look like they’d be right at home in an American Horror Story season.

Below is the official synopsis for Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark:

“Inspired by one of the most terrifying children’s book series of all time, SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK follows a group of young teens who must solve the mystery surrounding sudden and macabre deaths in their small town.”
