Here’s my Severance S2E3 review and as you’d guess the rabbit hole just gets deeper and deeper as we move further into this new Season. However, as always that dive ever deeper is exciting, engaging and just weird enough to captivate.
As usual for this series I will be discussing Full Spoilers below. If you wanna know what I thought without the details, here it is.
As said above, the rabbit hole goes deeper. However, we do get some more information and learn just a little more. A usual this creates even more questions and mystery. There’s a certain uncomfortableness about Severance. Little touches which just make you aware of that feeling and the awkwardness of characters. If you love that aspect of Severance, like I do, you’re gonna love Episode 3.
**Episode 3 SPOILERS Below**
Episode 3 feels like we have now moved beyond the fallout of the Season 1 finale. Mark S has images of Ms. Casey and he and the other MDR’s are all off to ask anyone they can find where she has gone. As such we get to meet Gwendoline Christie who seems to be Mark S’s equivalent (supervisor) in the Goat Department.
Just like when MDR met O&D, there is a fundamental lack of trust. Clearly, Lumon has fostered the idea that other departments are not to be trusted. You can see it evidently without the show needing to spell it out. Culminating in a weird scenes which makes so much sense if you follow the show. Namely, Helly and Mark S being asked to show their bellies off to prove they don’t have pouches. Hence the title above.
I love how we as the audience are now familiar enough with how Lumon operates that we get why they are asking this immediately. Oh, and the writers don’t feel the need to have one of the lead characters remind the audience of this fact. Clearly Lumon has fostered a rumor that there’s something non-Human about people from MDR. It highlights what I love about this show. It won’t dumb itself down so you can follow along. You either pay attention and question everything you see, or you miss the brilliantly worked clues and answers.

I also talked above about an uncomfortableness in some scenes. There were a few in Episode 3. Milchik’s meeting with the Board, weird as that always is, was even more bizarre than usual. You know I love Milchik (and Tillman) and one scene between Milchik and Natalie was just downright creepy and off. Yet, it was mesmerising in a way. It felt like both of them were scared whilst the Board was on call and relieved when they disconnected. We also had a really great moment like this between Cobel and Helena towards the latter part of Episode 3. We just get the feeling, as Cobel does, that she should not follow Helena inside Lumon.
Mark Knows and Dylan’s Wife
So Mark finally gets the truth from Reghabi, that Gemma is alive in Lumon. Immediately he agrees to the risky procedure of reintegration. That’s as far as we get to go until Episode 4. However, finally Mark truly knows what the audience does and that sets up the stage for the rest of the Season. It’s going to be intriguing seeing these characters, all with differing goals, interact with one another.
And yes, we finally get some Dylan Outtie action. I thought it very interesting seeing Dylan G meet his Outtie wife. You get the feeling that Dylan G hasn’t experienced whatever it was that broke Dylan. I think his wife see’s the old Dylan she fell in love with in Dylan G. That’s an interesting angle to explore. How we are changed by our negative experiences in this world. There are definitely marital issues between the G’s and we know meeting his family is now a secret reward for Dylan G. I could see him and his Outtie wife interreacting more this year as we discover the truth behind Dylan’s Outtie life.
Par for the course with Severance, Episode 3 is wonderfully shot, beautifully acted and expertly written. I think the only question for me is whether this was as good as the opening two episodes, or better? I gave the first two episodes A’s. After really thinking about it for a while, I love all three episodes equally for different reasons.
No Theories?
No Theory section this week, as I think we got a lot of information, but little context. I still cannot say for certain whether we’ve seen Helly R this season. Which is really hard to do and keep someone like me guessing. Most shows will plant too many seeds to make the less attentive viewers feel smart. Severance, as said above, doesn’t care if some people don’t get it. There’s no dropping in with Season 2 and just picking up the thread. If you want to experience Severance, you’re gonna have to watch from the start and see every episode in order. It feels like TV for grown ups with an above average intelligence.
GRADE: A
Equally as good as the previous two episodes, so far Season 2 has been high quality. Let’s hope this level continues for the rest of the Season.
