Shazam! Director Compares The Films To ’80s Classics Like The Goonies And Back To The Future

After the big shake up at DC Studios, Zachary Levi gives an update on his DCU status going forward.

Recently here at LRM Online in a recent entry of Best Scenes Seen on Screen, I pointed to the classic movie Back to the Future. There are countless classic scenes in the movie, but the one I pointed to wasn’t really a “classic” scene exactly, but that didn’t stop it from making a big impact on me. The scene in question was at the beginning when we see Doc Brown get completely shot up by the Libyans.

To me, scenes like that really punctuated the differences between family movies in the ’80s and family movies now. Family movies in the ’80s were willing to go dark. They will willing to throw around a few swear words. Nowadays, with many family-focused movies, it’s kind of all-in on the kid demographic or not. With DC’s upcoming superhero flick, Shazam!, it looks like we may be returning to the ’80s in terms of their family film approach, as director David F. Sandberg mentioned to

“It’s a fun movie. It sounds like a pure comedy, but it touches on some pretty dark subjects… I like to compare it to 80s movies like Goonies, like Ghostbusters and Back to the Future. Like, it’s a family kind of movie, it’s not dark and grim.”

I can certainly dig the comparison to The Goonies. Again, like Back to the Future, it was a largely lighthearted romp — but one that still hard real stakes and consequences that made viewing them all the more exciting as a kid. From what we can tell, that same approach will be used by Sandberg in Shazam!, which I’m all for.

The last movie to really do that for me was Super 8, and while I enjoyed the tone and style of it, the overall story still kinda underwhelmed me. Perhaps Shazam! will be the unexpected return to the world of the ’80s that I’ve been looking for!
