Shazam!’s Early Previews Top Aquaman

After the big shake up at DC Studios, Zachary Levi gives an update on his DCU status going forward.

Like Aquaman, Shazam! had a set of early screenings this past Saturday. To be more specific, it had roughly 1,200 paid preview screenings around the country. According to Deadline, the film managed to snag $3.3 million in box office grosses for those screenings — so in spite of not being out yet, technically, it has some money in the bank already, which is good news for DC.

You may remember that Shazam! isn’t the only film to have done that. Last year’s Aquaman also had early screenings like that, and it took in around $2.9 million. Other similar preview grosses are Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle with $1.8 million and How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World with $2.6 million.

This is obviously a good start, but it’s worth noting that these preview screenings aren’t really indicative of how a movie will perform. They aren’t Thursday preview screenings, so they don’t bleed into the opening weekend, and given the limited number of times and screenings, it’s hard to use it to gain meaningful interest.

That being said, those screenings also marked the lifting of the embargo on the film, and with 63 reviews up on Rotten Tomatoes at this point, it is sitting pretty at a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. This will definitely give it an overall boost in its opening weekend, so here’s hoping it pulls in the numbers it deserves.
