She-Hulk Writer Compares COVID-19 To Star Wars — Did She Go Too Far?

She-Hulk Is A Mess Rumor Resurfaces From A New Source

We all may be separated in our own apartments and homes, but we’re all in this COVID-19 pandemic together. As much as it feels like I haven’t physically interacted with a human being in weeks, I feel almost more connected than ever before. Every little thing that goes on in regards to the pandemic, we’re all privy to almost instantly, for better or worse. We’ve seen a lot of highs and a lot of lows over the past several weeks, and it really does bring one thing into question…what is appropriate behavior regarding COVID-19?

We’re all struggling here to keep ourselves sane, entertained, and human all at once. But at what point has one gone too far? Well, it looks like we are seeing plenty of people understandably starting to draw some lines in the sand. Dana Schwartz, writer for the upcoming She-Hulk TV series on Disney+, recently put out a couple of tweets that poked fun at COVID-19.

“COVID-19 is going to be like Rise of Skywalker,” Schwartz wrote. “It’s a nightmare. It’s going to be a struggle. But then we’re going to get to come out the other side and pretend it never happened. Also, we’re not going to be able to fully grasp what went done without reading a ton of extra literature.”

Of course, it didn’t take long for people to start reacting to the tweet. Some pointed to the fact that not everyone will be privileged enough to simply forget it. Some also pointed at how ridiculous it is to compare a deadly pandemic to a movie that she didn’t like. And some even piled on, with one user saying that, like with The Rise of Skywalker, there are many who will say COVID-19 wasn’t that bad.

But do any of these jokes go too far? Is it too much to make light of something that has killed tens of thousands of people and could very well kill hundreds of thousands or millions? I think it falls under those gray areas, but there is something to be said about gallows humor.

Soldiers use it to cope with the atrocities they see. Doctors of all sorts do the same in regards to their worst patients. Given what we’re living through, it is my personal opinion that we’re allowed to make light of this very serious situation. In times like this, it’s hard not to look to history in how some of the worst parts in recorded human history were essentially turned into jokes.

While it’s not 100% confirmed, one commonly-cited explanation for the song “Ring a Ring o’ Roses” is that it originated during the Black Plague. If true, it’s just another instance of people finding ways to cope with their current situations.

And you know what? If making fun of a silly Star Wars movie is enough to make some people smile, then I say, why the heck not. At the end of the day, I don’t think it’ll change how seriously we all see the current state of affairs. Perhaps if Schwartz had been a public leader or politician, I would think differently, but as an entertainer or normal “civilian,” I think it should be acceptable.
