Sherlock Holmes Ditches Guy Ritchie For Rocketman’s Dexter Fletcher

Sherlock Holmes is one of those franchise that, while successful, hasn’t been a big enough hit for Warner Bros. to rush out a threequel. Yes, stars Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law have impeccable chemistry, but there’s been a sizable gap between the 2011 film and this impending 2021 release. With director Guy Ritchie having recently been busy with Aladdin, it almost seemed like the studio was waiting for him…but were they.

Well, now a new report from THR has seemingly thrown that idea out the window. According to them, Rocketman helmer Dexter Fletcher will be taking on this third film in the mystery-action franchise, which is set to have Downey and Law reprising their roles as Holmes and Watson, respectively.

This will be quite the step up for Fletcher, whose career has been on a solid ascension between his involvement in Bohemian Rhapsody and this year’s Rocketman. However, with the first Sherlock Holmes having taken in $524 million and the second $545 million, it’s clear this is going to be quite the increase in scope for him, which is cool.

The film will be filmed from a script written by Chris Brancato. There, sadly, is no word on why Ritchie isn’t returning for this third outing.
