Simon Kinberg cites Andor as one of the inspirations for his upcoming Star Wars trilogy in a recent interview. It was announced by current/outgoing Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy that Kinberg had been tapped to write and produce a trilogy of movies set in the upcoming ‘New Jedi Order’ era of the GFFA.
We know there is at least one other movie currently in development for this era. The Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy directed Rey Sequel, which is now with another new writer is seen as the beginning of this era. The Shawn Levy helmed Star Wars: Starfighter may have some connections to this new era, but it is set only 5 years post-The Rise of Skywalker. The Rey Sequel is 15 years post-TROS and we have no timeframe for Kinberg’s trilogy yet other than it’s set after the Rey Sequel.
Speaking with Nerdtropolis, Kinberg said this of his impending trilogy,
“It’s not even a dream come true—I couldn’t have dreamed it. Just to be told there’d be more movies would have been unbelievable. To be allowed on the set of any of them was already a dream. My enthusiasm only grows with working on and around it.”
“There’s a ton of wildly talented folks that want to do great work. I was super inspired and just sort of awestruck by what Tony Gilroy did with Andor. I thought that was about as good of science fiction storytelling as you can do in any franchise.”
“I’ve always been enthusiastic about it,” he said. “I always will be.”

Now, regular readers probably know I’m not a fan of Simon Kinberg. His resume speaks for himself for me as both a writer and certainly he’s not a director. I seem to recall he cited The Dark Knight as a major influence on X-Men: Dark Phoenix, Kinberg’s second failed attempt at adapting that story to screen.
However, maybe Kinberg does have a good idea for a new trilogy? I’m not against him as an ideas man/producer. As long as the script gets passed to more capable hands before filming, to sharpen it up. Then, pick the right director, which could be different for each film if there’s an overall vision to adhere to. It all depends how much ego Kinberg has and whether he’ll invite other writers/directors on board to help achieve his vision.
Let’s face it, George Lucas was an ideas man. He wasn’t a great writer by his own admission and I’ll say he was limited as a director also. That’s why I’m less super negative about Kinberg, for now. However, I reserve the right to change my mind as this trilogy develops.
What do you think of his comments as Simon Kinberg cites Andor as one of the inspirations for his upcoming Star Wars trilogy? Thoughts below.
