I love me some Simpsons and Family Guy. While Family Guy has been around since 1999, it is even more amazing that The Simpsons are coming up on Season 30! Whether you feel there have been quality issues as each season passes, you have to give both shows credit for their longevity.
According to a new report from The Wall Street Journal, Fox has movies for both shows in development, but will this change once Thanos…I mean Disney…takes over? There isn’t a ton of information at this time, but let’s start by looking at The Simpsons.
After having a summer of 2007 release, the first Simpsons movie was a relative hit bringing in around $527 million world-wide. Now while such numbers seem like a shoo-in for a sequel, it isn’t quite that easy:
“‘I’d say [it’s in] the very earliest stages,” Simpsons showrunner Al Jean told EW last year during the movie’s 10th anniversary. “I certainly am cautious about a couple things. I wouldn’t want it to be risky in terms of budget, and I would not want it to be anything that we did purely for the money. I would want it to be a really great movie. I personally feel no need for another one unless it’s great.'”
I think that they are taking the right approach. Often times it seems that studios feel obligated to jam out a sequel because of the success of its predecessor, yet quality is then lacking.
As for the Family Guy film, it is said to be a mix of animation and live-action. The idea of a Family Guy move has been discussed since 2007, but some of the same concerns mentioned above are also shared.
Once again I feel he has the right idea. Putting story/quality before money. That’s not something we are always used to these days. Another area of concern that both movies share is the idea of creating a movie while the series is still in progress and how difficult that can be to balance stories, time, etc., which makes complete sense.
What do you think of the development of The Simpsons 2 and Family Guy? Do you think they will ever get out of this stage? Would you like to see this films come to life? What are some stories you’d like them to follow? Leave your thoughts in the usual spot, and thanks for reading!
