Sir Patrick Stewart Back In Star Trek As Jean-Luc Picard? Make It So!

There have been hints from various sources that CBS was planning to bring back Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard, the captain of the Enterprise throughout Star Trek: The Next Generation and the accompanying TNG era movies. However, there was always the possibility this would simply be some kind of cameo in Star Trek: Discovery, rather than a continuation of the TNG era universe.

The good news is that not only is Patrick Stewart back as expected, he will be leading a brand new series for CBS. We expect this show will follow the events post-Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Nemesis which also served as Patrick Stewart’s last appearance as Picard. Stewart took to Twitter himself to share the news with his countless fans, here is what the veteran actor said.

We know that Alex Kurtzman, James Duff, Akiva Goldsman, Michael Chabon, and Kirsten Beyer will serve as the creative team behind the project, which is the second Star Trek universe series to hit the streaming service after Star Trek: Discovery which will begin its second season in early 2019. We have no word on a name for this new show, nor a premiere date, but we would expect it to hit some time later into 2019. There is also no word yet on the other iconic former crew members of the Enterprise, which is unsurprising given how little we know about the content of this show.

There are also rumors of at least two other shows, one of which rumored to be a series set in Star Fleet academy. It seems like CBS are going all out to make their streaming service Star Trek central and who can blame them? After years off of TV screens, it was definitely time to bring back Star Trek. The fact that a show is coming set in the TNG universe set post- Star Trek: Nemesis is fantastic news to this fan’s ears. I always found that era far more well-oiled and deeper than the era of Kirk and Spock and after the events of the likes of Deep Space Nine, Voyager and the TNG Enterprise movies, the Galaxy they reside in was left in a potentially interesting position.

The Dominion had been defeated but at the cost of practically destroying the Klingon Empire and leaving The Federation and the Romulans as the only two superpowers in the Quadrant. The ending of Voyager also presented new opportunities regarding The Federation’s defense against the Borg, as Captain Janeway broke time travel rules to bring several advanced technologies back to the current timeline, along with all the data from the Delta Quadrant her crew amassed along their journey. I can’t wait to see what kind of stories are left to explore in a Galaxy that feels smaller and more accessible than ever before.
